Energy Use Intensity Score (EUI): __ kBTUH/sq. ft./yr. Coming soon.
Benefit: This project embraced state-of-the-art building and mechanical system technologies
Site: A sunny light filled open meadow to the south facing a wetland and backed by a heavily wooded steep slope to the north.
Program: 3,000 sq. ft. residence in three parts. The east wing includes an accessory dwelling unit, woodworking studio, and garage. The west wing houses the master bedroom, quilting studio, exercise studio and writing studio. The central wing is the great room featuring the kitchen, living and dining room as well as two outdoor patios—one to the north and one to the south each with a water feature.
Sustainable Solutions: The house is approached from a southern courtyard where gardens, water feature, and patios create a light-filled exterior room. The main entrance is a glass breezeway that is part of the central circulation spine of the building and joins the west wing (master suite), the central wing and great room (featuring Panamanian artists). A second glass breezeway joins the great room to the east wing and accessory dwelling unit. The great room features sliding glass walls with access to north and south patios, heavy timber beams and wood ceiling, a custom metal art fireplace surround by metal artist Michele Van Slyke and custom woodwork in bamboo by William Walker Woodworking.
This residential project includes a ground source heat pump (slinky coil) system, green roof over the central wing, and super insulated walls. The building is wired for future solar power and roof space has been reserved for photo voltaic panels.
